What is LifeOS
LifeOS is a life management system. It helps you manage all aspects of life and work through two core note systems -- Periodic Notes and Theme Notes.
Core Philosophy
Our brains are great at thinking, but not at remembering and managing. As the number of things to handle grows, the brain becomes like a maxed-out CPU -- trying to execute the current task while maintaining context for other tasks, making it impossible to focus.
The goal of LifeOS is to become your "Second Brain" -- an external system that takes on things you don't need to focus on right now but can't afford to forget, freeing your first brain to concentrate on the present.
Two Core Systems
The LifeOS methodology is built on two dimensions:
Periodic Notes (Time Dimension)
Using time as the axis, Periodic Notes manage tasks, goals, and time through daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly, and yearly notes.
- Long-term notes (yearly, quarterly) -- Low predictability, suitable for goal management. Set annual goals at the beginning of the year, break them down into quarterly milestones each quarter.
- Short-term notes (monthly, weekly) -- Medium predictability, suitable for task management. Further break down quarterly goals into specific monthly and weekly tasks.
- Daily notes (daily) -- High predictability, suitable for recording. Capture ideas anytime, log progress, track time spent.
Theme Notes (Topic Dimension)
Using topics as the thread, Theme Notes typically employ the PARA classification (Projects, Areas, Resources, Archives) for knowledge management.
- Projects -- Items with clear deliverables and deadlines, highest actionability
- Areas -- Aspects of life that require ongoing maintenance and responsibility
- Resources -- Topics of interest or knowledge collections
- Archives -- Inactive projects, areas, and resources
Actionability increases progressively from Archives to Projects.
How the Two Dimensions Work Together
These two systems each provide different contexts:
- Periodic Notes provide time context -- When a certain time point arrives, open the corresponding periodic note. It contains rich time-based information for task management, goal management, and time management.
- Theme Notes provide topic context -- When you want to dive deep into a topic, open the corresponding theme index. The note has already collected relevant materials on that topic for knowledge management.
The two are interconnected through tags, links, and other mechanisms, forming a complete management network. For example, you can record tasks belonging to a project in your daily note, and through tags, find them on the project's index page.
Why Choose Aino LifeOS
The LifeOS methodology itself doesn't depend on any specific tool -- you can practice it with Obsidian, Notion, or even pen and paper. But as a desktop app purpose-built for this methodology, Aino LifeOS provides the best experience:
- Built-in methodology support -- Creating, navigating, and indexing Periodic Notes and Theme Notes are native features
- AI enhancement -- AI can understand your note context, assisting with recording, review, and decision-making
- Automated indexing -- Cross-note task collection and theme tag indexing are handled automatically by the system
- Visual calendar -- Display tasks and schedules in calendar form for intuitive time management
